Aww, fresh and clean sheets!! I cannot wait to climb into my clean bed tonight!! Or is it? Probably not!! Did you know that the average human sweats about a ½ pint of perspiration a night? That is a lot of sweat!!!! It will go right through your sheets and guess what absorbs it? Yup, your mattress!!! Not only does your mattress collect sweat but it also collects dust, dust mites, dead skin cells, spills and even more. Ok, enough of that!! Let me tell you how to CLEAN it the best way possible.
1. Vacuum your mattress at the start of each of the 4 seasons. Make it a tradition. On the first day of winter, vacuum. On the first day of spring, vacuum. Summer and Fall, repeat. Also, if you can flip your mattress, do it at the same time. If like me, you cannot, rotate it instead. Put the foot to the head and the head to the foot. By vacuuming, you are removing the dust and dirt that has settled on the top.
2. Next, make is smell fresh and do not use the products that you sprinkle on your carpets but instead, take out your sifter or a small holed colander and sprinkle baking soda over the mattress. If you want a nice smelling mattress, now is the time to add your scent. Use a few drops of an essential oil and add it to the baking soda before you sift it on the mattress.
3. Now let it sit for 30 minutes and you guessed it, vacuum it again!!
4. If you notice some stains on your mattress, now is the time to try to remove them using a cold damp cloth and dab it. Next, add a mixture of equal parts of baking soda, salt and water and put it on the stain. Let sit for 30 minutes and clean it off with cold water. If your stain didn’t come out, try a mixture of 2 parts hydrogen peroxide and 1 part dish soap (Again, I love DAWN). Dab it on the stain and then use a brush to gently rub it in, leave it for minutes and again, remove with a cold, damp cloth.
